Doppler ultrasound examination

Doppler ultrasound examination

Ultrasound examination using the Doppler method - Ultrasound examination of the veins of the lower extremities

What is it

The Doppler ultrasound examination is a non-invasive examination that uses ultrasound waves to create a visual representation of the veins. It is performed by an experienced vascular surgeon. It does not require special preparation.

Indications

It is a basic diagnostic test used to detect abnormalities in the flow of veins, look for blood clots and malfunction of the venous valves. The examination is necessary to qualify the patient for sclerotherapy.

The course of the examination

The examination is safe and painless. A special device with a head is used for it. After applying the gel on the patient's skin, the doctor applies the head, and high-frequency sound waves are emitted by the head and sent deep into the body. Then these waves reflect from internal organs and are picked up as an echo by the head, and the computer converts this information into an image on the monitor. The examination lasts about 30 minutes.

Purpose of the examination

The veins of the lower extremities are most often examined to look for blood clots. especially in the veins of the lower extremities. This condition is called deep vein thrombosis. Blood clots in the veins can break away from the walls and enter the pulmonary arteries leading to a pulmonary embolism. Early diagnosis of thrombosis allows for appropriate treatment and prevents dangerous complications.

Moreover, the test is used to diagnose lower limb edema. Among people with varicose veins, there are defects in the venous valves, which under normal conditions prevent blood from flowing back.

The examination allows for an accurate picture of the place where the valves do not work properly.
