Migraine

Migraine

What is it

Migraine: what is the so-called headache primal, that is, without an organic cause. It is a bothersome ailment that significantly limits normal functioning and worsens the quality of life.

Migraine without the so-called aura is characterized by headache attacks lasting 4–72 hours. The pain is localized on one side, it is pulsating and intensifies with normal physical activity. You are hypersensitive to light, sounds and smells during the pain, and you may experience nausea and vomiting. If a pain attack is preceded by symptoms such as visual disturbances, muscle weakness, sensory or speech disorders that last from a few minutes to an hour, we diagnose migraine with aura. In chronic migraine, attacks of pain occur up to a dozen days a month (≥15 days) for ≥3 consecutive months.

Treatment

If untreated, migraine can become chronic. The frequency of seizures and pain intensity then increase. The goal of treating migraine is to reduce the frequency and severity of headache attacks. Preventive treatment is considered for patients who have migraines more than 4 days per month, but also for less frequent headache attacks.
The first-line treatment is pharmacotherapy. If the treatment is unsuccessful then botulinum toxin is used.

Procedure

The use of botox consists in administering the drug in a specific dose to the appropriate parts of the muscles that irritate the nerves responsible for the occurrence of pain. These muscles relax and the pressure is reduced by blocking the neuromuscular connections. Reducing muscle contractility prevents the occurrence of pain attacks. The procedure does not require anesthesia. After the treatment, you can return to your daily activities

Effects

The action of the toxin lasts at least 6 to 12 weeks. The first effects can be felt a week after the treatment. The effectiveness is estimated at about 80%. Among most patients, seizures disappear completely, in others the frequency and intensity of pain are significantly reduced.
